Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturdays 12-4 p.m. and by appointment. NOW PLAYING! presents artists who use the advertising techniques employed for big-budget Hollywood films to address issues that they feel are being addressed by neither the main-stream media or the art world. Keith Duncan uses the visual equivalent of hip-hop music's sampling techniques in his paintings, which explore the inner city experience. In REDRUM/AMADOU Marina Gutierrez juxtaposes video of the Amadou Diallo trial with film clips of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining to reveal the everyday horrors with which we live. V i s u a l: 1 || 2 || 3 || 4 || 5 || 6 || 7 Angela Valeria, in her video On The Cusp, contrasts the speeding, ordered, linear time of the workaday world with the slower, balancing, regenerative time of nature. McDonald Layne presents a photographic installation, which employs motifs from Hollywood films from the 1940s that move Americans of color from their traditional comic-relief roles to the roles of the heroes and heroines. Charles Dennis presents Shootout at Betacam Canyon a tongue in cheek video parodying the competitive nature of the New York art world. Andy London presents T-Rex, an irreverent animated dance video set in an art museum. Raphael McAden presents still photo collages of an imaginary film of Sun Ra and his Cosmic Blues Arkestra, Live at Symphony Space in 1978.
